Subject: McLAURY, McCLAUGHRY inquiry
Date: 27 Jun 1998
I'm looking for references to the name McLaury & McClaughry. Robert = Houston McClaughry (may have already been changed to McLaury by the time they came to Iowa) (1811-1893) moved from Kortright, NY to Belle Plaine (?), Benton Co., Iowa in 1855. 20 Sometime after 1859, he moved to Buchanan Co. & died July 7, 1893 in Hazelton, Buchanan Co., Iowa. I believe he farmed & practiced law (so there may be court records?) & his children attended a common school & pre-law. His children were: Ebenezer Rowland, Margaret Findley (Applegate), Edmund, Mary E., William Rowland, Margery Agnes, Robert Findley, Christiana (Armstrong), Thomas Clark, Sarah Caroline (Reid), John, Arthur & Charles (Robert H. was a lusty gent!). The latter children would have attended school in Buchanan Co. Hope to hear from you. Thank you 20 Clay Parker 2427 Monroe Ave. Everett, Wa. 98203

I am currently doing research into the family of a Japhet Chapin ALLEN, b. 25 Nov. 1810 in Amboy, Oneida, New York, who lived in Fairbanks, Buchanan, Iowa in his later life.. He is buried there with his wife, Chloe STANFORD, b. Camden, Oneida, New York on 30 Nov. 1813. Japhet's parents are a bit elusive. His mother is Tabitha CHAPIN, daughter of William & Martha CHAPIN of Springfield, Hampden, Massachusetts. His father is a Daniel, Thomas or an Artie ALLEN. We're not quite sure. All we know is that he died in 1814. Japhet Chapin ALLEN died 14 Jan 1892. Chloe STANFORD died 2 Feb 1893 in Fairbanks, Buchanan, Iowa. I have pictures of some members of this family. Researcher is Ruth Helvy. Any information you can give me would be appreciated.

1860 census shows Archibald Burriss living in Buchanan Cty, Liberty TWP with wife Clarissa and sons, Alonzo and Eddy and someone named Luther (possible his father). I know his wife remarried within a couple of years. I wonder if there is a death record or obituary in Buchanan Cty. The next generation used the spelling "Burrhus" so census could have wrong spelling. Also, some info I got years ago said he also went by the name "Frank"? Thank you for any information. I'd like to request a look-up in the "Obituaries 1856 - 1869" reference book. I'm searching for information on my great-great grandmother Elizabeth CROSSFIELD. According to the information I have, Elizabeth CROSSFIELD was born about 1835 in Linn County, Iowa. She died in March 1863; three of her sons died at approximately the same time as Elizabeth. She was married to John Mervin HALSTEAD (or Halsted) in Linn Co. Iowa on May 7, 1856. So little is known about Elizabeth that any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated. I'm especially interested in learning her parents' names (and siblings), but any information would be very helpful. I imagine her name would be listed as Elizabeth HALSTEAD or Elizabeth HALSTED in an obituary record book. Thank you very much for your assistance. Keep up the good work on Buchanan County! Sincerely, Phyllis Barnes

This set of grandparents have me completely stumped. I have tried everything on this side. The Franklin Co. Court house had a big fire along time ago, and of course there's no records of Archibald and Elizabeth. No one in the family seems to have any records. I have checked the Oil City records also, with no luck. My great uncle let me copy the old family bible, the info is not to accurate. I think someone dubbed it, in the 1930's to show proof or hope of the big Buchanan scam $$. I am a professional genealogist also, and I have been looking endlessly for this connection. My hope was that someone would see my post, and maybe give me another piece of the puzzle. Thank you very much for your advice, I am going to go over everything I have again and see if Iv missed a piece of my puzzle. Again thanks for your help. Shirley

Madison Haye died 1887 in Independence IA, occupation well driller according to a newspaper obit. His wife, Rhoda (Mohler) survived along with 2 small children, David and Jerry. Rhoda remarried the following year in Buchanan IA to William Truair. The obituary doesn't state where Madison is buried but presumably in Independence. Comments: I am researching the Lobdell name. Earl Adelbert Lobdell, my grandfather, was born in Independence, Iowa in 1884. His father was Brayton Leroy Lobdell (from New York, born 1852. His mother was Mary Berger (from Iowa, born 1858).
