John Bartzen dies suddenly Wednesday Eve. Stricken with heart attack in the afternoon and dies few hours later in hospital.

The community was saddened Wednesday evening to learn of the death of John Bartzen, prominent retired farmer. Mr. Bartzen had been in ill health for about a month and was taken to a Fort Dodge hospital Wednesday afternoon. Death was caused by a heart ailment.

Funeral services were held at the home at 1:30 Saturday afternoon, and at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church, with the Rev. Shultz and the Masonic Lodge in charge of the services. Interment was in Glenwood cemetery, with the Masons in charge of the graveside rites.

Obituary

John, son of John and Dora Bartzen, was born in Alsace Lorraine on Sept. 3, 1875. He passed away at Mercy hospital at Fort Dodge on the evening of January 26, 1949, at the age of 73 years, 4 months, 23 days.

He came to the United States with his parents at the age of 5 years when they settled in Sandwich, Illinois. He came to Iowa in 1902 and settled on a farm in Humboldt County where he lived until 1939 at which time he retired and moved to Goldfield where he resided until the time of his death.

On March 19, 1909 he was united in marriage to Caroline Rasmussen. To this union were born two daughters, Dora Werling of Renwick and Myrtle Olson of Fort Dodge, and one son, Leo Bartzen of Goldfield.

He is survived by his wife, Caroline, his three children, three grandchildren, one brother, Albert Bartzen of Neodesha, Kansas and other relatives. He was preceded in death by two infant sisters and one brother, Leo.

He was one of the charter members of the Fountain City Lodge. Mr. Bartzen was a kind and loving father, placing others welfare above his own. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. –The Goldfield Chronicle
