August 20, 1923 ---- August 5, 2021

Guest, 97, was gunnery bomber in WW II

Roger Thomas Guest died August 5, 2021 in Salt Lake City of heart failure. He was 97.

Roger was one of Jackson’s oldest residents. He was born August 20, 1923, in Belmond, Iowa. His childhood was there and in Toledo, Ohio. He went to high school in Bay City, Michigan, and graduated from Central High School in 1941.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in September 1942. Part of his training was at a training center in Salt Lake County. He met Janet Bywater at a USO dance in Salt Lake before he served as a gunnery bomber in the South Pacific. They were married in 1944 in Savannah, Georgia, and had two children together before divorcing in 1959.

Roger graduated from the University of Utah in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science in accounting. In about 1952 the family moved to Rock Springs, where Roger worked at FMC in the mining industry for 27 years.

After his divorce Roger married the love of his life, Cesarina M. “Rena” Anesi, on Sept. 16, 1961. They lived in Rock Springs until the late 1970s before settling in Jackson. They also spent some seasons in Tucson, Arizona, near Guadalajara, Mexico, and lived at Star Valley Ranches and several places in Jackson.

Roger loved spending time outdoors fishing, skiing, horseback riding and backpacking. They enjoyed many wonderful hiking friends and groups. But Roger especially cherished exploring the Tetons with Rena.

His survivors include his widow, Rena; children Gayle (Craig) Shuler, of Sandy, Utah, and Rob (Julie) Guest, of American Fork, Utah; grandchildren Terra, Angie, Caleb, Ryan, Judd and Jamie; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Roy Thomas Guest, mother, Agnes Alice Reed Guest, sisters Doris Cuthbert and Alice Jean McIntyre, brother Dale Guest and a grandson, Rory Guest.

Roger was a gunnery bomber during World War II and was awarded the Silver Star.

A ceremony to honor his service was held Aug. 16 at Silver Lake in Brighton, Utah, including presentation of the flag by the U.S. Air Force to Rena.

The family wishes to thank the loving care of the staff at the Senior Center of Jackson Hole and Pioneer Homestead Apartments, and the medical community in Jackson that helped keep Roger and Rena independent in their home until the end of Roger’s life. We appreciate all of their Jackson friends, neighbors and family.

Rena has moved to Sandy, Utah. Contact her at 10005 Roseboro Road, Sandy, Utah 84092-3811.
