John Michael Voigt was born October 16, 1953, to Keith and Veloise Nolte Voigt in Iowa Falls, Iowa. He graduated from Eagle Grove High School, Eagle Grove, Iowa, in 1971. He later graduated from Buena Vista college in Storm Lake, Iowa, with a Bachelor's degree in Social Services. He worked at the Woodward State Hospital in Woodward, Iowa, and then for the Tekawitha Adolescent Treatment Center for troubled youth in Sisseton, South Dakota. After working with the Department of Human Services in Eagle Grove, the family moved to West Union in July 1996. Here he worked as a social worker for the Fayette County Human Services office. He was a member of the United Methodist Church.

John Michael Voigt died Friday, June 4, 1999, at the University Hospitals in Iowa City at the age of 45. He is survived by his son, Josh; his parents, Keith and Veloise Voigt, Eagle Grove; one brother, Merle Voigt, and his wife, Valinda, Amarillo, Texas; two sisters, Claudia Olson, and husband, Paul, Spirit Lake, Iowa, and Vicky Gilmore and husband, Ken, Sparta, Ill. He is also survived by four nephews and two nieces. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorreen, on February 14, 1997.

Memorial services were held on Tuesday, June 8, 1999, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church of West Union, Iowa, with Reverend Bill Ballard and Reverend Kay Roath officiating. Inurnment will be at the West Union Cemetery at a later date. Burnham - Wood Funeral Home in West Union was in charge of arrangements.

John Voigt, 45, died Friday, June 4, 1999, in University Hospitals, Iowa City, after a long illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, United Methodist Church. Inurnment will be at a later date in West Union Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday at Burnham-Wood Funeral Home, West Union. Survivors include a son, Josh of West Union; his parents, Keith and Veloise of Eagle Grove; a brother, Merle of Amarillo, Texas; and two sisters, Claudia Olson of Spirit Lake and Vicky Gilmore of Sparta, Ill.
