Richard Askvig, 84, of Cody, Wyo., died peacefully at home Nov. 29, 2017. He was born the sixth of 10 children on April 4, 1933, in Goldfield, Iowa, to Tillman and Rose (Borel) Askvig. Graduating in 1951 from Goldfield High School, Richard was going to be drafted, but couldn’t be because of rheumatic fever. He worked in a washing machine factory and was a fireman on the railroad while in Iowa.

In 1957, Richard married Mary Younglove. They had three children Guy, Dean, and Terri. Their family moved to Cody in 1964. He and his father-in-law Beebe had a trapline from Cody to Cheyenne. For a short time, he worked as a policeman, and then as a mail carrier from which he retired after 26 years.

Richard had a lifelong love of baseball, coaching many kids for many years, although his favorite was his women’s basketball team. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, loved playing cards and loved Wyoming.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, son Guy, brothers Jim, Harry, Harold and Merle, sisters Ida Nelson and Verabelle Askvig, and brother-in-law Jerry Stroh.

He is survived by his wife Mary, son Dean, daughter Terri Roberts (Gerald Nelson), grandson Clay Roberts, three sisters Ardith Holtan (Mel) of Managha, Minn., Darlene Kastler (Larry) of Woolstock, Iowa, Doris Mayes (Bob) of Des Moines, Iowa, sisters-in-law Helen Stroh of Cody, and Lois Smith (Norm) of Mayer, Ariz., and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial Services will be Wednesday, Dec. 6, at 2 p.m. at Ballard Funeral Home, with reception to follow at the Irma.
