Olive V. “Ollie” Anderton, 76, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday morning, Sept. 19, 2017, at Trinity Medical Center, Bettendorf, Iowa. A celebration of Ollie’s life was held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 22, at First United Methodist Church in Maquoketa. A memorial visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. A private inurnment will be held at a later date from the Union Cemetery, rural Maquoketa.

Olive Vivian Boyington was born Sept. 2, 1941, in Dows, Iowa, to Hugh and Elizabeth (Lamberson) Boyington. She first attended a one-room schoolhouse in Elma, Iowa, then graduated from Riceville High School in 1960. She married James “Jim” Anderton Feb. 25, 1961, in Riceville. To this union four daughters were born: Lee Ann, Wanda, Lori and Rebecca. Prior to her marriage, Ollie worked as a nurse’s aide at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. In 1963 she and Jim moved to Maquoketa and she worked as a preschool teacher at Mother Goose Pre-School then Sunshine Daycare and Preschool in Maquoketa until her kids were all in school. In 1978, she became activities director at Maquoketa Care Center for 25 years, retiring in 2003.

Ollie was a member of First United Methodist Church in Maquoketa where she was active in the UMW and the Ruth Circle. For many years she had been a member of card clubs, the Jackson County Master Gardeners, and in retirement served on the Board of Directors of Maquoketa Care Center. Ollie enjoyed shopping with her daughters, flower gardening, cooking, baking, kittens, dogs and horses and spending time with her family, especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Those left to honor her memory include her husband, Jim Anderton of Maquoketa; daughters Lee Ann Freiburger of Dubuque, Iowa, Wanda (Mike) Meagher of Brookline, N.H., Lori (Laura Taylor) Hollingshead of Robins, Iowa, and Rebecca Formenti of Maquoketa; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Claude Boyington, and grandchild Meagan Hollingshead.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a memorial fund is being set up for a gift of kitchen items to United Methodist Church.
