December 19, 1929Died From a Bite of a Rat
Frederick Kahlstorf died recently on his farm in Hancock county at the age of 73 from the bite of a rat. He caught the rat in a steel trap. When he lifted the trap by the chain the animal ran up the chain and fastened its fangs in to the fleshy portion of his hand. He paid but little attention to the wound and it was not long until what is known to the medical profession as rat fever set in and death resulted.&&&&&&&&&

November 28, 1929Fred Kahlstorf, an aged and respected farmer of Liberty township, Hancock county, father of Mrs. Frank D. Fisher of Titonka, passed away Friday, following an illness of nearly four weeks caused by a rat bite. Mr. Kahlstorf, about four weeks ago, took his dog and went out to the barn to kill rats. While his dog was chasing a rat, it ran up one of his pant legs to his arm. He clamped his arm down on the rat and took the other hand to release it. The rat caught one of his fingers and held to it and it did not let loose of his finger until he killed it. He paid little attention to the wound made by the rat for a week or two when he was forced to his bed since which time he grew worse and worse until his demise. His daughter, Mrs. Frank Fisher has been with her father constantly for two weeks while her husband has made several trips to Britt during his illness.
