James Patrick "Sam" Martin, 76, Northwood, died Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011, at the Veterans Home in Marshalltown. A memorial and celebration of life service for Sam will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. South, Northwood, with Pastor Wendi Gillan of the United Methodist Church in Northwood, officiating. Inurnment will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Manly with military graveside honors conducted by members of the Edward-Tosel American Legion Post No. 110 of Manly. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service time on Wednesday at the chapel.
James Patrick Martin was born on March 29, 1935, in Manly, the son of James S. and Kathryn (Ryan) Martin. Sam graduated from Manly High School, and also attended the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn. He was inducted into the Army on Nov. 17, 1954, and served his country honorably and faithfully, serving most of his time in Germany until his honorable discharge on Oct. 24, 1956. He was united in marriage to Carole Schaffer on Aug. 1, 1959, and to this union three children were born. He was united in marriage to Gwendolyn "Gwen" Johnson on Nov. 15, 1975, in Dallas, Texas. She preceded him in death on Sept. 10, 2008.
Sam worked most of his career in the sales field until his retirement in 2002. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, and always had a joke to share with his family and friends. Sam moved to the Veterans home in Marshalltown in 2009, to be closer to his daughter Kathleen and his grandchildren.
Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Kathleen (Tom) Brandhorst of Dysart, and Steve (Stephanie) Martin of Katy, Texas; three grandchildren, Thomas J. Brandhorst of Iowa City, Mitchell Brandhorst of Dysart, and Chad Clayton of Katy, Texas; his brother, Dennis Martin of Colorado; as well as many other extended family members and friends. Sam was preceded in death by his parents; son, Tony Martin; wife, Gwendolyn; brothers, David and Billy Martin; and a sister Corrine Kerr.
