October 31, 1927 - January 5, 2018

Helen Anita Balfe, age 90, of Faribault, passed away on Friday, January 5, 2018 at Pleasant Manor Nursing Home, Faribault.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Grace Lutheran Church, Hanlontown, Iowa, on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Linda Johnson Prestholt officiating. Interment will be held at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis at a later date.

Memorial visitation will be at the church for one hour prior to the service on Saturday.

Arrangements are being completed by the Boldt Funeral Home, Faribault.

Helen was born in Fertile Township in Worth County, Iowa, on October 31, 1927, to Johan and Adalaida (Jacobson) Furness, the youngest of sixteen children. She grew up on a farm in rural Worth County. Helen was baptized and confirmed at the Hanlontown Lutheran Church and was a graduate of Hanlontown High School.

She was united in marriage to Roger A. Kingland on August 20, 1946. Together they had five children. This marriage ended in divorce. Helen was united in marriage to Wade Monroe Hanks on September 1, 1962. Together they had three children. Helen was employed at the Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf, Faribault for many years. She and Wade also managed Robinwood Manor and after Wade's death, Helen managed the Park Village Apartments. She married Kevin Balfe on July 1, 1992 and after Kevin's death moved to Nevis, MN with her beloved pet, Daisy. Helen enjoyed reading, sewing, cooking, working in her yard and garden, traveling and spending time with her grandchildren. Helen was very proud of her Norwegian Heritage.

She is survived by daughters, Linda (and David) Fulton of Hanlontown, IA, Lisa (and John) Chisholm of Forest City, IA, Sheryl Velishek of Bozeman, MT; sons, Leon (and Debbie) Kingland of Faribault, Scott Hanks (and significant other, Patricia Blow) of Faribault, and Michael (and Cheryl) Hanks of Wabasha; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Roger Kingland, Wade Hanks, and Kevin Balfe; son, Lynn Kingland; daughter, Lou Anne Bell; granddaughter, Shelley Lynne Frenzen; five brothers and ten sisters.

Memorial gifts may be directed to St. Croix Hospice.
