J. K. Ofsthus was born in Vossevangen, Norway, September 14th, 1869. June 2nd 1893 he sailed from his native land bound for that land of promise which has never yet belied those who are honest and willing to work. After remaining in Chicago for 15 months he came to Northwood where he has ever since resided. He attended school here one winter. The next autumn he entered Breckenridge Institute, Decorah. For a time he worked at the carpenter's trade. On Nov. 1st 1897 he engaged in the hardware business in the old Tosdal building. As his business grew he removed to his present commodious quarters, where he keeps a well assorted stock of up-to-date hardware.

In April 1904 he again crossed the water to see his parents in the old home.

Mr. Ofsthus was joined in marriage to Miss Bertha Brown, the ceremony being preformed in Northwood January 1st, 1900. To this union two children have been born, Minnie B. and Arthur K.
