Andrew Gray, Northwood's veteran blacksmith. was born on the 7th day of February, 1842. in Dearborn, Mich. When he was 20 years of age he went to Detroit to learn tin- blacksmith trade. In 1867, having become a skilled workman, he came to Northwood and in September of that year opened a shop on the lot where his present shop stands. For almost 40 years he has plied his trade on that very spot and the virtues of the celebrated village blacksmith might well be attributed to him. In the early days of his residence he lived in Northwood's first court house.
For years he has been trustee of the Methodist church and also church treasurer
All of the people and most of the horses in this vicinity will be sorry when Andrew Gray is too old to work.
Mr. Gray was married on the 18th of June, 1873 to Miss B. L. Abbey, of Northwood, who died six years later. In 1894 he was united to Mrs. Margaret Thompson, also of this city, who is still privileged to share his sorrows and his joys. He has one daughter, Lettie E., now the wife of R. D. Robertson. of Minewaukon, N. D.
