R. P. Johnson, one of Northwood's longtime business men, was born in Denmark on the 14th day of August. 1854. The family emigrated to America in the spring of 1869 and settled in Dane county, Wis. July 4, 1869, they came to Hancock county. Iowa, where the subject of this sketch remained until March 25, 1878 when he came to Northwood, which has ever since been his home. He im­mediately became book-keeper for the firm of Eckert and J. C. Williams, which position he held until Oct. 1. 1886;. On the later date he organized the Northwood Bank, com­prising H. P. Johnson. O. V. Eckert and J. C. Williams as stockholders. He became cashier of this institution and conducted its affairs until 1890, when it was sold, becoming the Northwood Banking Co. Since 1890 Mr. Johnson , has been engaged in the real estate, loan and insurance business. In l901 he helped to organize the commission and grain firm of Way, Johnson & Lee Co., with headquarters in Minneapolis. This firm is still in business though the firm name has been changed.

Mr. Johnson was married in Northwood on the 24th day of December, 1879, to Miss Lena Hove of this city. They have one son, J. O. E. Johnson, now assistant cashier of the First Na­tional Bank of Northwood.
