Andrew C. Walker

Andrew C. Walker, of the firm of Walker Brothers, real estate, collection and loan agents and conveyancers, settled in Northwood, Worth Co., Iowa, in 1871. He was born in York Co., Maine, Jan. 16, 1828. Receiving an academical education, he taught school several years, commencing to teach at the age of seventeen years. In 1864 he was appointed chief clerk in the paymaster-general's office at Augusta, Maine. He also had charge of' the State pension bureau, disbursing from $30,000 to $50,000 a year to its indigent soldiers. Perhaps no man in Maine had a larger acquaintance with the prominent public men there than Mr. Walker had when he left Augusta in the spring of 1871, having been for seven years in constant employ at the State house, serving as clerk on many important committees, such as that of equalization, of municipal war debts, investigation of paper credits, etc. He was married in Maine to Harriette, daughter of Israel Boothby. They have two children-Emma E., wife of Charles F. Littlefield, a prominent merchant of North- wood, and Charles H., of the same place. Mr. Walker after coming to this county, was appointed deputy auditor, elected president of the independent school district, chairman of school house building committee; held the office of mayor of the city, and was elected representative and served in the seventeenth General Assembly. Hon. A. C. Walker is anoth­er man, who though not strictly speaking a pioneer, yet whose name is inextricably mixed with the development of Northwood. He was born in York county, Maine, January 16, 1828, and came to Northwood in 1871. From 1868 to 1871, he was chief clerk in the paymaster general's office in Augusta, Maine, and also had charge of the state pension bureau.
After coming to Northwood, he engaged in the real estate business and in the remaining years of his life amassed a comfortable fortune. Mr. Walker was mayor of Northwood and representative from the 69th district in the 17th general assembly.
Mr. Walker was married to Miss Harriette Boothby on the 20th day of March 1849. They had two children, C. F. Littlefield and C. H. Walker, both of Northwood. Mr. Walker died July 17, 1901 and Mrs. Walker June 28, 1902. Source: The Semi-Centennial Souvenir of Northwood, Iowa, 1907, page 15.
