SIOUX CITY - Maurine Matthew "Sissy" (Duling) Byers, formerly of Sioux City, entered into heaven following a lengthy illness May 20, 2009, at a Houston, Texas hospital under the watch of her husband and children.

No services are planned at this time.

Maurine was born Feb. 12, 1930, to parents Dr. Raymond and Evelyn Duling. She was raised in Sioux City, where she attended Central High School, graduating with the class of 1947. A gifted and talented artist, she attended the University of South Dakota and the Kansas City Art Institute. Her talents in art and music followed her throughout her life in everything that she accomplished.

A beautiful woman, after living in Hawaii for two years, she returned to Sioux City where she met and married her soul mate, John P. "Jack" Byers. They began their life together in Yuma, Ariz, and eventually had four children, John Jr., Julienne and Edward Byers, all of Houston, Texas, and Kirk Byers of Orlando, Fla. She was also blessed to be a grandma to two special grandsons, Beau and Dean Byers, both of Houston.

In 1966, the couple settled in Clear Lake City (Houston), Texas, where they lived for 22 years. Upon retiring in 1988, they moved back to Yuma, Ariz, until her illness last summer.

She was a devout Catholic and attended Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Sioux City. She was known to her Sioux City and Lake Okoboji friends and family as "Sissy"

She is survived by her loving husband; children; grandsons; her dear sisters and brothers-in-law, Mrs. Audrey Hudspeth of Houston, Dienne and Dr. Don Rodawig of Spirit Lake, Iowa, and Evelyn and Butch Momsen of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She loved all of you.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Dr. Edward Duling; nephews, Dr. Kevin Duling and Robert Hudspeth Jr.; and in-laws, Mrs. Darlene Duling, Robert Hudspeth Sr. and Mrs. Meg Duling.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Easter Seals Society or a charity of your choice.

Mom will be greatly missed but never forgotten. She taught her children to be creative, inventive and to always have faith. Her art will be seen and her music will be heard in our hearts forever. We all have an angel in MOM.
