CHEROKEE, Iowa (Died Sioux City)- Ruth Helen Ballantyne, 75, of Cherokee died Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at First Church of Christ in Cherokee, with Gregg Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, with Ruth's brother-in-law, Dennis Castle, officiating. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee. Condolences may be sent online to www.greenwoodfuneral.com.

Ruth was born Feb. 25, 1934, in Ashton, Iowa, to Harm and Gertrude (Hoting) Reiter. She graduated from Wilson High School in Cherokee in 1953.

On Oct. 2, 1955, she married Merlin Ballantyne in Cherokee. She worked for Northwestern Bell as a telephone operator for 25 years. She then worked for the Cherokee Mental Health Institute as a switchboard operator for another 25 years.

She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She liked having garage sales. In her younger years, she enjoyed camping in an old converted school bus. She enjoyed crocheting, collecting Fostoria crystal, shopping and spoiling her grandchildren. She was a member of First Church of Christ and most recently, the Crossroads Church.

She is survived by her husband, Merlin; three children, Bryon Ballantyne of Davenport, Iowa, Merleen Hanson of Vermillion, S.D., and Betheen and her husband, Todd Groepper of Williamsburg, Iowa; and her grandchildren, Tony Hanson and his wife, Stephanie, Aaron Hanson, Cassea Groepper and Grayson Groepper.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Grace Castle and Henrietta and her husband, Donald Windhurst; a brother, Fred Reiter; and a son-in-law, Russell Hanson.
