Virgil Evans Metcalf, 80, formerly of Sioux City died Tuesday, December 2, 1997 in Ponca, Nebraska.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church in South Sioux City, with the Rev. Dale Jirousek officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery at Sioux City. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m. at Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel.

Mr. Metcalf was born September 23, 1917, in Hornick, Iowa, the son of Homer and Macey (Ficken) Metcalf. He was raised in Hornick and attended Hornick schools. He lived in Chicago, while attending photography school.

He married Betty Dierking on July 28, 1946 in Chicago. The couple moved to Sioux City and lived here until moving to Ponca, Nebraska 20 years ago. She died August 12, 1991 in Sioux City.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and served in the Naval Reserves for 20 years. He was employed as a meat inspector for the USDA for 20 years, retiring in 1982.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church and a former member of the Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include a son and his wife, David and Sharon of Boone, Iowa, a daughter and her husband, Marsha and Ronney Barrs of Ponca; a brother, Duane of Des Moines; two sisters, Cleora Ferrara and Constance Mathison and her husband Robert, all of Sioux City, 10 grandchildren, Tiffany, Blayne, Derek and Taylor Barrs, Mirando Oien, Kimberly De Emo, Erin Petrak, Kelly Yoder and Jonathan and Reagan Metcalf, a special niece, Jackie Stinger and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Morris, Donald and Clifford.
