Alice A. McDermott, 93, of Johnston, Iowa, formerly of Sioux City, Anthon and Battle Creek, Iowa, died Monday, December 1, 1997 at the Bishop Drumm Care Center in Johnston of heart failure.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Assumption Catholic Church in Granger, Iowa with the Rev. Eugene Koch officiating. Graveside services will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday in Calvary Cemetery at Sioux City, with the Rev. Randy Guerdet, pastor of Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City, officiating. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m. at the church. Brandt Funeral Home of Dallas Center, Iowa is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. McDermott was born October 2, 1904, in Battle Creek, the daughter of Jens and Christina (Oleson) Paulsen. She had lived in Anthon, Iowa from 1906 – 1923.

She married Joseph Raymond McDermott on April 15, 1925, in Sioux City. She was employed as a sales clerk with Gennelli’s Studios in Sioux City. The couple had lived in Granger from 1974 to 1995. She moved to Johnston in 1995.

She was a member of Assumption Catholic Church.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Roger and Cecelia of Lakewood, Colorado; two daughters and their husbands, Jo Ann and Forrest McElmuray of Granger and Jean and Leonard Grochowski of Whittier, California; three sisters, Martha Sterrett of Anthon, Millie Manning of Wichita, Kansas and her twin sister, Amy Thrall of San Anselmo, California; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, Martin and Harry Paulsen and a sister, Anna Peterson.

Pallbearers will be Matthew Backhaus, Matt Manning, Gary McElmuray, Frank and Mike Metzger and Ken Oxley.

Memorials may be directed to either Assumption Catholic Church or the Bishop Drumm Care Center.
