Death Claims Noted Citizen

Funeral services for George A. Thompson, 68, manager of the Sioux City Horse and Mule Company, who died Friday afternoon in a local hospital, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in West’s Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. F.B. Shaner, rector of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, will officiate. Interment will be at DeKalb, Illinois, where Thompson spent his early years in the horse business.

Mr. Thompson had been in ill health for some time. When his condition grew worse last Wednesday, his daughter, Miss Mary Thompson, of Chicago, and son, Louis K. Thompson, of Evanston, Illinois, boarded an airplane to Omaha, where they were met by friends and brought to Sioux City.

Born September 23, 1870 in Oregon, Illinois, Mr. Thompson later moved to Rochelle, Illinois, where he attended grade and high school. Then he went to Chicago where he first engaged in the business to which he devoted his life. Going to DeKalb, Mr. Thompson opened a livery stable and became associated with the firm of Strauss and Hexter of New York, dealers in finest grade carriage horses. He remained there from 1892 to 1906.

Mr. Thompson married Miss Hulda Kylen in Madison, Wisconsin in 1901. From DeKalb they went to Maryville, Missouri and then to Creston, Iowa in 1909. In 1920 he came to Sioux City to become manager of the Sioux City Horse and Mule Company, a position he held until he retired in June 1938. During the war while he was in Creston, Mr. Thompson shipped work horses to all parts of the world.

Because of his knowledge of horses, Mr. Thompson was selected by the Abu-Bekr Shrine mounted patrol to purchase the original stallion for the patrol, a true white Arabian which he found in Greenville, Texas in 1924.

Mr. Thompson is survived by his widow, Mrs. Huldah Thompson; his son, Louis and daughter Mary, a sister, Miss Ada Thompson and a brother, Henry Thompson, both of Chicago.
