Steven Sample, 56, of Sioux City passed away Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2006, in Sioux City.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Riverside Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Charles B. Wolff officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Steve was born July 2, 1950, in Sioux City, the son of Robert and Olive (Petit) Sample. He grew up in Sioux City and attended Everett School and Riverside Junior and Senior High School. He served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam. He also served as a member of the Stage Hand Local 42.

He married Julie Lynn Nicolls on Feb. 19, 1981, in Sioux City. The couple made their home in Sioux City. He was employed by the city of Sioux City, Field Services Department for 27 years. He also worked as a track official at Blackbird Bend Raceway in Onawa, Iowa, and as a security guard at Interstate Speedway in South Dakota.

He was a loving husband, a dedicated friend who would do anything for anyone. He loved life and celebrating holidays with family and friends. He had the ability to develop special bonds with his nieces and nephews, helping them with sports activities, life experiences and learning how to enjoy life as he did. He was an avid NASCAR fan, loved to ride motorcycles, three wheelers and jet skis. He was often out boating, fishing, camping or bicycling. He loved animals and was known to bring home stray dogs and cats to give them a home. He was a member of the AFSCME Union, the National Rifle Association and the American Association of Retired Persons.

Survivors include his wife, Julie L. Sample of Sioux City; two brothers and their wives, Russell and Eva Sample of Jefferson, S.D., and Ron and Robin Sample of Muskogee, Okla.; two sisters, Ellen and her husband, Ron Bridget of Sioux City and Dori Brown of Arvada, Colo.; his father and mother-in-law, Roger and Judy Nicolls of Sioux City; two sisters-in-law, Teresa and her husband, Ken Kamradt and their daughter, Katie and Nancy Nicolls, all of Sioux City; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and a host of many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Gerald and Richard; and a great-nephew, Bailey Sample.

Pallbearers will be Nick Sample, Andy Sample, Kurt Peterson, Bud Britton, Chris DeHarty and Ed Pickens.
