On Thursday morning at 6 o’clock, Mr. Theo. Smith died at his home in this city, death coming after an illness of about ten weeks, during which he was a most patient sufferer. Mr. Smith was born in Roehl, Germany, July 19, 1852. When he was about sixteen years of age he came to America and located near Ossian, where he stayed about two years, later returning to Germany, and on his return to America he was accompanied by his parents, four brothers and one sister. They settled on a farm south of St. Lucas. On September 19, 1876, he was united in marriage to Miss Anns Haubrick at St. Lucas. To this union were born nine childrenP{sic}—Peter, who died in infancy, Mrs. Kate Kunnen, from near Festina, Mrs. Anna Berg of West Union, Mrs. Mary Knox of Prairie du Chien, Joseph of Dillon, Mont., Mrs. Dean Richeter of Los Angeles, Cal., John, who lives on the home farm south of town and Rose and Crete at home. He also leaves to mourn his demise his wife, four brothers and one sister. Mr. Smith won many friends by his kind and sympathetic nature, who will deeply mourn his departure. He was a true husband and father. The funeral was held on Saturday at 10 o’clock from St. John’s church, Rev. Father Dragoun officiating at requiem mass. Interment was made in the Catholic cemetery. Those from a distance who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Henry Rink, Joseph Haubrick, Frank Maruska, Victor Croat of Cresco, Mr. and Mrs. Mat Rasch and Mrs. Elgin of Hammond, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Britton of Ossian, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Clemence Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Jake Lichter, Mr. and Mrs. Mat Blong of Waucoma, Mr. and Mrs. Hageman of Calmar Mr. and Mrs. Joe Holthaus of Festina, and the Jacob, John and Theo. Smith families from near St. Lucas.
Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows this was Theo. Schmitt who was born June 8, 1852 which does not agree with the above. It also shows his wife’s maiden name spelled Houbrich
