DEATH’S TOLL.
John Curtin and Daniel Riley, Both Early Day Residents, Succumb After Short Illness.
DANIEL RILEY.
Daniel Riley, who came to Winneshiek county with his parent in 1855, died on Saturday evening from a stroke of paralysis sustained on the Wednesday previous. Mr. Riley was first stricken with paralysis several years ago, and while he recovered from the effects of it and has been in fairly good health, he was unable to perform any labor.
Daniel Riley was born in London, England, February 24, 1851, and came to America with his parents at the age of four years. With the exception of ten years, which he spent at Rice Lake, Wis., Decorah has been his home since coming to America. On October 6, 1875, he was married to Frances L. Plato. Three children were born to them, two of whom (Jessie and Maggie) died in childhood. Mr. Riley is survived by his wife and daughter Nora (Mrs. W. S. Riley) of Faribault, Minn., and two sisters Mrs. Edw. Vine of Decorah and Mrs. W. A. Bonestel of Ventura, Cal. Mr. Riley was a mason, and worked at his trade until incapacitated by illness. He was a man of genial disposition and in the days of his activity was a favorite with a wide circle of acquaintances, who join in extending condolence to his relatives.
The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon at the home, Dr. Wellington McVettie reading the prayers and Dr. M. Willett delivering the funeral sermon. Interment was made in Phelps cemetery.Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he died Mar. 24, 1917.
