Geneva Halverson age 100 of Decorah, IA passed away on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian, IA.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 25, 2024, at First Lutheran Church in Decorah with Rev. David Severtson presiding. Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah.

Geneva A. (Thompson) Halverson was born on January 29, 1924, to Albert and Leona (Sorenson) Thompson in Ridgeway, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at the United Lutheran Church in Ridgeway, IA. Geneva attended rural school in Ridgeway. She graduated in the class of 1941 at Decorah High School.

Geneva was united in marriage to Roland (Ronald) Halverson on January 17, 1942, at First Lutheran Church Parsonage by Rev. T. A. Hoff. To this union four children were born: Douglas, Brenda, Judy and Boyd. Geneva was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Decorah. She was a member of the WELCA and the church circle.

Geneva was a homemaker on the farm south of Decorah in Springfield Township. She and Roland raised their children on the farm. She was often seen helping out in the milk house or with any farm task that needed to be handled. Upon retirement, the farm was kept in the family and Roland and Geneva moved to town. They filled their days by watching the neighbors, going for rides and visiting family. She later moved to Goose Island Apartments where she enjoyed coffee hour with her friends. One final move to the Ossian Senior Hospice was where she lived until her last day.

Geneva loved entertaining visitors and spending time with her family. Saturday mornings her kitchen was a meeting spot for all of the family to catch up on the week’s activities and Sunday was reserved for church. Visitors were always treated to an impromptu lunch and a homemade dessert. Geneva’s hobbies included crocheting, reading and baking.

She was survived by her son Boyd (Jan) Halverson, her daughter Brenda Headington all of Decorah. Son-in-law: Gary Hovey. Nine grandchildren: Bill Headington, Becky Courtney, Beth Headington, Brent (Jill) Halverson, Dana (Mark) Carolan, Joel (Cyndi) Halverson, Chad (Tracy) Halverson, Ryan Halverson and Tim (Jessi) Hovey. 20 great grandchildren, one brother-in-law Dale Halverson and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, spouse Roland, her son Douglas Halverson, her daughter Judith Hovey. Grandchildren: Richelle Halverson, Decorah, Michelle Halverson and Bradley Halverson both in infancy; great-grandson, Rhett Hovey in infancy; brother and sister-in-law, LaMoyne and Edna Thompson, mother and father-in-law, Oscar and Nora Halverson, sister-in-law, Virginia Halverson, son-in-law Bill Headington; nephews Rodney Halverson, Ricky Halverson, Scott Halverson and David Thompson and niece Roxanne Ingle.
