Frank Kanda died at the home of his daughter Mrs. John Doubek on Sunday at about 1 o’clock, after a few weeks’ illness, due to old age. He was born in Protivin, Bohemia, and at the time of his death was about ninety-six years old. He was married twice, the first marriage taking place in Bohemia to Miss Anna Kautman, who passed away in July, 1891. To this union were born nine children, four sons and five daughters. Two sons and one daughter died in infancy. The others are Mrs. Anna Humpal, Mrs. Theressa Mann and Mrs. Catherine Schissel, who are all deceased. Frank of Prairie du Chien, Wis., Wendell of Phillips, Wis., and Mrs. Mary Doubek of this place. In 1866 they came to this country, settling near Calmar, and after a few years’ residence here they removed to South Dakota, where they lived for about ten years, later coming to this place, where his wife died. After living here for about one year he moved to Prairie du Chien, Wis., where occurred his second marriage to Mrs. Vacha, who also preceded him in death. After a ten years’ residence there he came to this place to spend his declining years. Despite his old age Mr. Kanda was unusually hale and hearty and up to a short time ago was able to get around very well. The funeral was held from the St. John church at nine o’clock to-day, with interment in the Catholic cemetery. The pall bearers were his grandsons, Joseph, Edward, John, Adolph and William Doubek and Carl Houdek. A large number of people turned out to pay the last tribute of respect to one of our oldest and highely{sic} respected residents.
