Elizabeth Marian Scheidel, Ossian, Iowa, June 27, 2022
Elizabeth (Betty) Scheidel, 92, of Ossian, Iowa passed way on June 27, 2022. Betty was born in Iowa, baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in McGregor. She attended several country schools and graduated from Ossian Public School. She attended the University of Minnesota for a short time while living in Minneapolis, MN. She married her high school sweetheart, Freddie Scheidel and moved back to Iowa. Together they farmed for 60 years on the home farm in Ossian followed by working side-by-side with Freddie as cashier and bookkeeper for real estate and auction businesses.
Betty enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, dancing, reading, gardening, fishing, sewing, and camping. She spent many hours caring for the flower gardens on the farm. Freddie and Betty had four daughters: Jackie (Don) Kuennen of Waukon, Iowa; Nancy (Steve) Ritter of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Connie (Randy) Heying of Tabor, South Dakota; and Laurie (Kirk) Draper of Atkins, Iowa. Five grandchildren: Shelly (Kevin) Bendjy; Carly Kuennen; Alex Heying; Abigail (Keegan) Bohn; and Chris Ritter. Three great grandsons, Quinn and Tyler Bendjy and Calhoun Bohn.
Betty’s sisters include Harriet (Fielden) Monroe of Ossian, Iowa and Beverly Towle of McGregor, Iowa; one brother, David Bachtell (Diane) of St. Paul Minnesota.
Betty is preceded in death by her husband, Freddie Scheidel, her parents, infant sister, sister Anna Thorson, parents-in-law Fred and Jeannette Scheidel, brothers-in-law Richard Scheidel, Harold Scheidel, Eugene Thorson, and Richard Towle. Sisters-in-law include Gladys Scheidel, Pearl Scheidel, Helen Scheidel and most recently, son-in-law Don Kuennen.
In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorials may be given to St. Croix Hospice, Strawberry Point; Ossian Senior Hospice; or St. Francis de Sales Church.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 30, 2022 from 5-7 pm with a 4:30 pm Rosary at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian, Iowa. There will also be a one hour visitation before Mass time at the church on Friday.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 am on Friday, July 1, 2022 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian, Iowa with Rev. Bob Gross as the celebrant.
Burial will follow at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Cemetery in Ossian, Iowa.
Schmitz-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Ossian, Iowa is assisting the family with arrangements.
