THE SILENT REAPER.
JOHN ELWICK.
The funeral of John Elwick, whose death was briefly recorded last week, was held Saturday afternoon at the Methodist church, Rev. W. E. VanBuren, assisted by Rev. H. H. Green, officiating. A large attendance marked the respect in which the deceased was held. During the many years it was our pleasure to know him, Mr. Elwick was always the same—quiet, unassuming but ever the steadfast, true Christian gentleman and good citizen. The obituary given herewith was furnished by Rev. Van Buren:
John Elwick was born in the county of Durham, England, Sept. 16, 1828, and died at his home near Decorah, Iowa Dec. 11, 1907, at the ripe age of 79 years, 2 months and 25 days.
He came to America in the spring of 1852, at the age of 23, living for some time at Ironton, Ohio, where on the 18th of November, 1855, he was married to Sarah Jane Leadbetter, from which union two children survive—Alfred Elwick and Margaret Elizabeth Somers. In 1856 they moved to Winnebago Co, Ill., where his wife died June 1, 1861, he was married to Mary Johns in Rockford, Ill., where they lived until 1856, when they moved near Decorah and after four years, in the fall of 1868 they moved one mile north of Decorah, to the place which has been the family home until the present time and where nearly five years ago the wife and mother preceded him to the world beyond. To this union were born eight children, all of whom grew to manhood and womanhood, and all of whom still live to mourn their loss but Jennie Ruth who passed away nearly a year and a half ago. The living children are Mrs. Belle Stevens, Mary E., Thomas J., William, Robert A., Mrs. Anna Pilgrim and Fred G.
Mr. Elwick was born and confirmed in the Episcopal church of England and in 1853 was converted under the ministry of Rev. Mr. Creighton and joined the Methodist Episcopal church at Ironton, Ohio. Later he became a member at Rockford, Ill., and on coming to Iowa was for years a member of the Franklin Prairie class on the Burr Oak circuit, and on moving to the present home became a member of the First Methodist Episcopal church of Decorah, which has since been his church home, and in whose welfare he has been deeply interested, being for years a member of the official board.
