At 5:30 o’clock on the morning of October 5th Mrs. Jane E. Barker, one of the oldest residents of Decorah, passed away at the home of her sister Miss Deal Plato, after a brief illness. Mrs. Barker was the third daughter of the late P. C. Plato, and was born August 8, 1836. She was married on February 10, 1858, to Byron Barker. To them three children were born, one died in infancy and their son Charles P. Barker died May 30, 1905, leaving their youngest child Cora, (now Mrs. Charles H. Craig of Sioux Falls) as the only surviving child. Mrs. Craig reached her mother’s bedside the evening before her death. Mrs. Barker came to this county in 1861, living first on a farm four miles north of town, and since then in Decorah. Besides her daughter she is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Mary Rathbun of St. Paul. Mrs. Nancy Dickinson of Freeport and Miss Deal Plato. The funeral was held on Monday, the 7th, and the remains were taken to the Russell cemetery for burial beside the deceased’s parents and other relatives.
