Amy Harriet Hovden Rue passed away Monday morning, July 5, 2021, at Aase Haugen Senior Services in Decorah, at the age of 99 – 22 days short of her 100th birthday.

Visitation will be from 10:00-11:30 a.m. Friday, July 9, 2021, at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah, immediately followed by a brief graveside service and burial at the Lincoln Cemetery in rural Ridgeway with Rev. Jim Scaife officiating.

Amy was born July 27, 1921, in her grandparent’s home in Madison Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa to Gotfred Henry and Annetta Maria (Skadeland) Hovden. She was the oldest of three children. Amy was baptized in the Madison Lutheran Church by Pastor D.C. Jordahl and was confirmed there by Pastor Quill.

Amy attended Madison #3 rural school and then went to high school in Decorah, where she rented a room during the week. While attending high school, Amy worked as a waitress at the Hummer Café in Decorah. She graduated from Decorah High School in 1940.

After graduation, Amy worked as a dental assistant to Dr. Luce. She then went to work for the county auditor as a clerk until she was married.

Amy was united in marriage to Loren Richard Rue on January 12, 1944 in the Madison Lutheran Church. This union was blessed with three children: Sally Jane, Marsha Faye, and Richard Loren. When they were first married, Amy and Loren lived in Sherman, Texas where Loren was stationed in the air force as a flight instructor. Loren was promoted to the rank of Captain on May 25, 1950 and served in the Reserve until May 25, 1974.

Amy enjoyed being a mother and homemaker. She was a great mother and role model to her children. Amy taught Sunday School for many years, was active in WELCA, and provided years of service to the congregations and circles of the Lincoln Lutheran and Peace Lutheran Church. After her children were grown, Amy went to work (in 1973) for the Luther College Library at the circulation desk. She thoroughly enjoyed working there and retired from there in 1986.

Amy enjoyed traveling to see family and spending time with friends. One of the highlights of her later years was a 90th birthday party where she traveled to Utah and was fortunate to see her entire family: children, grandchildren, AND great grandchildren.

She was a dear friend to many and was always doing something for someone else. She thoroughly enjoyed her monthly lunches and get-togethers with the "Luther ladies"!

She was preceded in death by her husband Loren in 2010, her son Richard in 2007, her parents Henry and Netta Hovden, her brother Verne Hovden, as well as her parents-in-law Ole and Lena Rue, and brothers- and sisters-in-law.

Amy is survived by her two daughters, Sally (Marty) Birk, and Marsha (Hugo) Jacobsmeyer, and her sister LouAnn Kapp Meyer, as well as grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

We wish to thank the many wonderful caregivers at Aase Haugen Nursing Home and who lovingly cared for our mother during her last years. They were family to her. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Aase Haugen Senior Services, 4 Ohio Street, Decorah, IA 52101.
