JOHN H. DASKAM.
Word was received in Decorah Sunday of the death of John H. Daskam, son of Mrs. Henrietta Daskam, at Pasadena, Cal. Deceased was born at Kendallville, Feb. 27. 1870. About ten years ago he was married to Miss Belle McEvitt who, with one son, survives him. For several years Mr. Daskam has been afflicted with tuberculosis, but sojourns in a warmer climate and good care had given hope of staying the ravages of the disease. It was with this idea that he went to California somewhat over a year ago, but a locality that had proven beneficial to others seemed to have a reverse effect upon Mr. Daskam. Death claimed him on January 7th. The remains will be brought to his old home at Kendallville for interment, where loving hands of friends who knew him as a capable and trustworthy young man will convey him to his last resting place.

This afternoon at 1 o’clock at the Methodist church in Kendallville will be one of the saddest funerals ever held here. It is that of John Daskam, who died in Pasadena, Cal., on Jan. 7th, after a long illness. John H. Daskam was born at Kendallville, Feb. 27, 1870, and grew to manhood here. After the death of his father he assumed the responsibility of the store and post office, until the property was sold to S. M. Culbert. About 10 years ago he married Belle McEvitt, and to them were born two children, Marjorie Belle, who died in infancy, and little Max. A few years after his marriage he accepted a position in West Superior, Wis. From there they moved to Minneapolis, where he held a good position until about four years ago when his health began to fail, and the doctors thought it advisable for him to take a rest. From Minneapolis he and his family came to Kendallville and after a few weeks’ visit with his mother here they went into the pine woods of northern Minnesota where they lived in a tent, so that John could get as much fresh air as possible. In the fall they came back and in October left for Coal Creek, Col., where they lived nearly a year, when they came back to Kendallville and spent the remainder of the summer. Thinking that the climate in California might be of benefit to him they went there in the fall and have lived there since. From the first moment of his sickness the best of medical skill has been employed and everything that a loving wife, mother, brothers and sisters could do for him has been done but in spite of all the dread disease had fastened itself upon him. He has been gradually failing all summer but was a patient sufferer. When writing to his mother at Kendallville he always wrote cheerful, hopeful letters and seldom complained. It seemed to do his one thought when writing home not to worry his mother. John was one of the very best of men, and from a boy has been loved and respected by all who knew him. To-day is a day of mourning throughout our community. He leaves a wife, one son, a mother, two brothers—Allyn of this place and Alson of Fort Atkinson,--two sisters, Mrs. John Clink of Orleans and Mrs. F. R. Goddard of Decorah, and other relatives and hosts of friends who deeply mourn his death. The family have the sincerest sympathy of our whole community in their great bereavement. Mrs. Daskam and little son arrived with the body at Cresco this morning. The M. W. A. lodge will take charge of the funeral, which will be held in the M. E. church here this afternoon. Rev. Stowers of Ridgeway will preach the sermon. The interment will be in the Kendallville cemetery by the side of his father
