The Centlivre family’s village in Alsace was about 9 miles from the German border. While living
in Dubuque County, Iowa, Charles met Christian Magnus, a German emigrant brewer. Magnus
moved to Festina (Twin Springs) about 1857 to help Charles establish a brewery. Charles
sought a place with greater brewing opportunities. Charles established the Centlivre Brewery in
1862, at Fort Wayne, Indiana, (Goggle: Centlivre Brewery)

Denis Centlivre started the Platteville Brewery (Wisconsin) in 1865? He owned it until
foreclosure in 1871. NOTE: The Centlivre brothers were among only a few French brewers in
the United States.
