Oscar M. Torrison.
The Chicago Evening Journal of last Saturday gives a two-column portrait of this gentleman with the following sketch of his career:—
The subject of this sketch is of Norwegian extraction, but was born in the city of Manitowoc, Wis., in 1861. His father was a leading merchant of that city, a man of prominence and sterling integrity. Mr. Torrison received his literary education in the public and high schools of his native city, and in Luther college, Decorah, Iowa, where he graduated in 1881. In 1888 he was president of the Alumni association of his alma mater. He took a course in the law department of the University of Iowa, graduating in 1882, and in 1884 was also graduated from the law department of Columbia college, New York city. He then entered upon the practice of law in Minnesota, remaining there until 1890, when he located permanently in Chicago, where he has already gained a large and lucrative practice, and has become well known as a diligent, skillful and thoroughly reliable lawyer, having the advantages of inherited honesty and good sense, as well as liberal literary and professional education, and may now be justly regarded one of the leading and representative Scandinavians of this city. Mr. Torrison has always been active and conspicuous in Norwegian affairs, and has served three terms as president of the Norwegian hospital. In politics he has always been a consistent republican, though not a narrow or bitter partisan. He is a man of refinement, has a commanding presence, and giving a first, and a lasting, impression of being a thorough gentleman. His recent appointment by Mayor Swift, as a member of the board of education, has given great satisfaction, not only to Scandinavians, but to all who are acquainted with his abilities, and the public may be assured that his service on the board will be conscientiously and carefully performed.
