LaVerne Duane Brue
August 8, 1933 - November 16, 2018

Surrounded by his family, LaVerne Duane Brue, age 85, of Forest City, formerly of Buffalo Center, passed away on Friday, November 16, 2018, at his home.

Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, November 21, 2018, at 10:30 AM at the First Baptist Church, 18508 Hwy 9, Forest City, Iowa, with Pastor Eric Weaver officiating. A gathering of friends and family will assemble between 5:00 and 7:00 P.M., Tuesday, November 20, 2018, at the First Baptist Church in Forest City. Burial of cremains will follow in the Madison Township Cemetery in Forest City with Military Honors presemted by the Forest City American Legion Post #121.

LaVerne, a son of Millerd and Manda (Holstad) Brue, was born on August 8, 1933. He attended country schools and graduated from Buffalo Center High School in 1951. Inducted into the U.S. Army, he served in Korea. Upon his discharge, he returned to Iowa to farm the family farm with his parents.

On February 8, 1957, LaVerne married Gloriann Tjarks. Together, they raised their children, David, Carolyn, Mary Beth, and Diane, on a farm southeast of Buffalo Center. He loved spending time with his family. After Gloriann’s death in 1998, LaVerne married Judith (Harrison) Birst on May 23, 2009.

Adventurers, he and Gloriann traveled extensively, often with the family in tow, seeing much of the US and Canada. He, also, traveled internationally, visiting Norway, Vietnam, Australia, and New Zealand in addition to taking a memorable trip to South Korea in 2016 as part of the Korea Revisit Program. In addition, LaVerne loved to fly. He took his small plane all over the US, including making three trips flying to and around Alaska. Moreover, he relished his trips to Australia where he flew a small plane around the island with a group of private pilots. While wintering in Tucson, he loved spending time at Ryan Airfield talking airplanes and flying with his pilot buddies.

A farmer right up to his last days, he would check the markets daily. Frequently, he took drives to watch the harvest, occasionally offering just a bit of coaching to his son-in-law and grandsons.

Faithful to his Lord, LaVerne served as a deacon for many years at the Congregational Church in Buffalo Center, and for the past twenty years, he enjoyed attending the First Baptist Church in Forest City. His Bible is well-marked with notes and underlining. Self-reflecting, he applied the Scripture to how he lived and loved even in the most difficult of circumstances. As he approached older age, his devotion to renewing his mind and opening his heart was evident to all who were blessed to be part of his life.

He is survived by his wife, Judith; his daughters: Carolyn Brue, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Mary Beth (Joe) McEuen, of St Louis, Missouri, and Diane (Brent) Matson, of Buffalo Center; his daughter-in-law, Barbara Brue, of Waukee, Iowa; eleven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and three sisters: Mavis Johnson, Elaine Hetland, and Joan Sunde; as well as many other family members and friends. LaVerne is preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Gloriann Brue; a son, David Brue; and son-in-law, Scott Arnevik.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention or Gideons International. The family wishes to thank Hospice of North Iowa for their care in his final months.
