After graduating from high school in 1944, he enlisted in the Army Specialized Training program in Brookings, South Dakota. After his eighteenth birthday, he was sent to Camp Hood, Texas, for basic training. Next, he was sent to the Philippines to train for the invasion of Japan. After serving in occupied Japan for eighteen months, he returned to the U.S. and was honorably discharged in November of 1946.

Then, Vernon attended Iowa State College for a two-year program in Dairy Plant Management. On July 25, 1948, he married his high school sweetheart, Carole Mae Heimdal. Before buying the Sunset Creamery in Ellendale, North Dakota, however, he worked at the creamery in Thornton, Iowa. In 1965, he accepted a position at Deluxe Products in Lake Mills, Iowa, where he worked until he retired in 1991.

Vernon enjoyed hunting, golfing, camping, and hiking. Indeed, he loved the outdoors and his many fishing trips to Canada and Leech Lake, Minnesota, as well as to other places with family and friends. In addition, he participated in many community activities including building a Habitat for Humanity home with his good friend, Jim Tweed. Nonetheless, he, most, loved his family and helping them with home improvement projects. Moreover, he enjoyed watching his grandchildren and great grandchildren perform in various activities.
