Edward Michael Putney
September 1, 1950 - April 20, 2018

Edward Michael Putney, 67, of Forest City, died on Friday, April 20, 2018, at his home.

Named after his maternal grandfather, Edward Michael Griffin, Edward was born to Hiram and Edna (Griffin) Putney on September 1, 1950, in Charles City, Iowa. He attended Immaculate Conception School through the 11th grade before the school closed. Consequently, he graduated from Charles City High School in 1969. While in high school, he played baseball and basketball and worked at the Smith Nursery. Afterwards, he attended North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) for about a year. Then, on November 8, 1971, he started working at Winnebago Industries. During this time, he lived in Garner and Mason City before moving to Forest City in 1979. On October 28, 1989, he married Linda. Subsequently, three children, Emily, Justin, and Tyler, were born to their union.

Ed had some notable experiences. Remarkably, he survived one unforgettable incident while sitting on the basement steps of his brother HiJoe and Judy’s house with their children, Andrea, Brian, Colleen, and Darin: the Charles City tornado of 1968. Whereas a telephone pole damaged his mother’s car which he had been driving, his own 1957 Chevy remained unscathed in the garage at his home. On another occasion, he enjoyed a trip with his brother, LeRoy, and his children, Stacey and Jason, on a vacation to South Dakota. Then, he took a memorable trip to Hawaii to watch Justin play football for UNI on what was also Ed and Linda’s 25th wedding anniversary.

Very much involved in the Boy Scouts with both his sons, Ed, even, went so far as to sleep on the turf at the UNI dorm during a scouting event when the boys were young. A huge fan of the Green Bay Packers and the UNI Panthersand a constant figure at all his children’s sporting events, he loved watching Justin and Tyler play football at UNI. Moreover, for many years, he played slow pitch softball and participated in a bowling league in Forest City. In addition, he enjoyed camping with his family.

Ed is survived by his wife, Linda; his daughter, Emily, of Monticello, Iowa; his sons, Justin (Ciara) and Tyler Putney (Kristin Hayden), all of Forest City; his brothers, HiJoe (Judy) Putney, of Mercedes, Texas, and Vince (Ginger) Putney, of Moreland, Georgia; his sister, Rose (Duane) Becker, of Casselberry, Florida; and his sisters-in-law, Vicky (Alfred) Putney, of Charles City, and Sue (LeRoy) Byrne; as well as by several nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hiram and Edna; his brothers, Alfred and LeRoy; his brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Dorothy; and his sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Bob Lyman.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M., Saturday, April 28, 2018, at St. James Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 1:30 P.M., Saturday, April 28, 2018, at St. James Catholic Church, 906 West O St., Forest City, Iowa, with Rev. Paul Lippstock officiating. Refreshments and fellowship will follow the ceremony in the church hall. Inurnment of the cremains will follow at a later date at the Riverside Cemetery in Charles City, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Ed Putney memorial fund in care of the family; a scholarship will be established for future graduates.
