Richard H. "Dick" Biehl
December 23, 1927 - April 10, 2018

Richard “Dick” Harry Biehl, 90, of Lake Mills, Iowa, died on Tuesday, April 10, 2018, at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills, Iowa.

Dick was born on December 23, 1927, in Chicago, Illinois, to Edward and Mathilda (Heun) Biehl. He graduated from Christ (elementary) School and the Luther Institute (now Luther High School North). Next, he served for a short time in the U.S. Army just as World War II was ending. Upon his return, he worked for Commonwealth Edison in Chicago, an employer he stayed with until he retired.

On June 16, 1956, Dick married Gladys Wogen at Bethel Lutheran Church, his home congregation and where Gladys worked for the parish. Subsequently, a daughter, Janice Elaine, was born to them with much rejoicing.

Dick found his joy in singing, and he sang with his church choir for many years. President of the Bethel Lutheran Church Congregation, the Normennenes Singing Society, the Scandinavian-American Culture Society, and the Norwegian National League, he, also, served as a Board member of the Bethesda Home for the Aged as well as on a number of community committees. In addition, he served several times as a delegate to the church’s district conventions. On another occasion, he “survived the Flambeau,” a rafting, canoeing, overland-trekking test, an achievement which gave him a great deal of satisfaction.

In 1996, Dick moved with his wife, Gladys, to Lake Mills, Iowa, Gladys’ home town, to be closer to family. Jan, Greg, Lauren, and Kris had previously moved here.

Those left to mourn, but with gratitude for the time with their beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather include his wife Gladys; his daughter, Janice (Greg); his grandchildren, Lauren (Bart) and Kris; and his great grandchildren: Phinneas, Rowen, and Asher; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held for Dick at 1:30 PM, Friday, April 20, 2018, at Salem Lutheran Church, 401 S Lake Street, Lake Mills, Iowa 50450, with Pastors Joel Guttormson and Christopher Martin officiating. Dick’s family will greet friends and other family members one hour before the service at the church on Friday. Military rites will be conducted by the Lake Mills Otto/Chose American Legion Post #235. Inurnment will take place at Salem Memorial Cemetery, Lake Mills, Iowa.
