Richard "Dick" C. Grothe
June 9, 1942 - February 7, 2018

Richard “Dick” Grothe, 75, of Leland, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Wednesday, February 7, 2018, at the Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City.

The youngest of 8 children, Dick was born on June 9, 1942, in Bloomfield, Nebraska, to Joe and Rose (Hettenbach) Grothe. After the family moved to the Forest City area in the early 1950s, Dick attended Forest City Community Schools. On July 23, 1960, he married Sandra Lund of Lake Mills. Then, in the spring of 1962, he and Sandra moved to Woodburn, Oregon. There, he first learned the carpentry trade from his brother-in-law. In May of 1965, the family moved back to Iowa after Dick fell from a roof, suffering a back injury that required surgery. Later, he started working for the Bartelson Carpentry. In 1978, he started his own business, Grothe Concrete & Construction. A very hardworking man, he took pride in every job he did. Moreover, he loved the opportunity to work outdoors from sun up to sun down until he retired at the age of 60 in 2002.

After retiring, Dick and Sandy took advantage of their time by spending it with friends (The NIT WITS) while driving from various camp grounds around the local area in their Winnebago. He, also, loved going to car shows to exhibit his cars which he also took a lot of pride in, especially in his ‘55 Chevy Belair. In addition, Dick treasured his family, and he loved spending time with his grandchildren. Moreover, an avid card player, he spent many hours around the dining room table playing various card games with family and friends.

Dick is survived by his wife, Sandra; his daughter, Christine (Tommy) Hembree; his grandchildren, Brandi Bushman, of Albert Lea, Benjamin (Tara) Grothe, of Lake Mills, Kelsey (Brandon) Lamping, of Forest City, Nick (Macy Rien Tzoulis) Grothe, of Colorado Springs, and Noah and Grace Grothe; and five great-grandchildren: Trinity Bushman, Carter Lamping, Halo Bushman, Olivia Lamping, and Kamdyn Grothe.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Rose Grothe; three sons, Brian (Beanhead), Gregory, and Terrance (Terry) Grothe; his brothers-in-law: Joe Zila, Jake Brouwer, and Merle Olson; his sister, Frieda Olson; his brothers, Paul and Joe Grothe, Jr., and his sister, Jenny Brouwer.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, February 17, 2018, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Leland with Lay Minister Rose Visser officiating. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5:00 to 6:30 P.M., Friday, February 16, 2018, at the Cataldo Schott Funeral Chapel, 505 North Clark Street, Forest City, Iowa 50436. Burial of cremains will take place in Forest Home Cemetery in Leland, Iowa, in the summer. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family in Dick’s name.
