Lynn R. Benson
April 15, 1953 - March 23, 2018

Ventura, Iowa - Lynn R. Benson, 64, of Ventura, died on Friday, March 23, 2018, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City after a courageous fourteen-year battle with cancer.

Lynn R. Benson was born on April 15, 1953, in Forest City, to Robert and Katherine (Rollefson) Benson. Baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City, he attended and then graduated from Forest City High School in 1971. He started working at the Harbourage in Clear Lake in the spring of 1971. After three months there, he went to work running construction equipment for Steven Hanna of Woden. In 1976, he married Kristi Thompson; they later divorced. While farming, he worked first for Holland Construction in Forest City for three years and then for LaHarv Sand & Gravel for many years. For five years, Lynn ran his own excavating business before going to work for Yohn Construction for nineteen years. In 2005, he started hauling chicken litter with his boys and in 2007 started L.B. & Sons with his son, Travis. Lynn moved dirt most of his life. He had a keen eye which is how he got the name “Laser Lynn.” In addition, he took a great sense of pride in his work which he, very much, enjoyed. After living in the Forest City area for many years, Lynn moved to Ventura in 1990 where he met Marcia Olson. They resided in Ventura, a town he cared about. Indeed, from 2012 to 2018, he served as mayor.

Lynn enjoyed drinking coffee at the local gas station and visiting. In addition, he had a passion for snowmobiling and watching his son, Aaron, race. Lynn enjoyed his family, especially when he could spend time with his grandchildren. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Lynn is survived by Marcia Olson of Ventura; his sons: Sheldon, Travis, and Aaron; his grandchildren: Toni, Rebecca, Brandi, Kortney, and Annika; his great-grandchildren, Izabella and RoseAlee; his brothers, Randi and Steven (Susan) Benson; his sister, Lori (Brian) Tomasek; his nephews, Logan, Coltn, and Hunter Benson; and his aunts: Marjorie Anderson, Dorothy Etzen, and Julianne Tosel; as well as by many cousins and great nieces, and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Derek, in infancy; and his brother, David Benson.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, March 31, 2018, at the Cataldo Schott Funeral Chapel, 505 North Clark Street, Forest City, Iowa 50436, with the Pastor Rod Hopp of Immanuel Lutheran Church officiating. A gathering of friends and family will assemble for one hour before the services at the funeral home on Saturday. Burial of cremains will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Lynn Benson memorial fund in care of the family.

The family invites everyone to join them for a Celebration of Lynn’s life that will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M., Saturday, at the Ventura Community Center in Ventura, Iowa.
