Dennis Rex Black died on Wednesday, January 24, 2018, at the age of 79.

The third of six children born to Claude and Nina (Stevens) Black, Dennis was born on June 3, 1938, in Rexburg, Idaho. A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, he served as an Elder.

Dennis grew up camping, hunting in the forests, and fishing in the rivers of Washington, Oregon, and southern Utah. He graduated from Columbia High School in White Salmon, Washington, in 1957. He, first, worked for a short time as a lumber jack and then for Boeing Aircraft in Seattle, Washington, before joining the Navy in 1958. Specializing in electronics, he serviced all communications equipment on the jet air craft. While completing three tours of duty during the Vietnam era, he served on the USS Ranger, the USS Coral Sea, and the USS Oriskany Aircraft Carrier. Next, he spent ten years in the Navy Reserve where he worked in Crypto Technology, doing top-secret assignments. He was honorably discharged in July, 1968.

On September 3, 1966, Dennis married Donetta (Holt) Irvin in Las Vegas, Nevada. They have four children, Richard, Melinda, Sheldon, and Michael. After serving his country, he worked as a field technician for Eastman Kodak for over twenty years. In 1998, he and Donetta moved to Iowa where they spent fifteen enjoyable years traveling the countryside delivering motor homes for Winnebago.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-one years, Donetta Black, of Buffalo Center; four children: Michael (Vanessa), Richard, and Sheldon Black; and Melinda (Mike) Eliason, all of Buffalo Center; nine grandchildren: Breanna Black; Dale and Colton Eliason; and Joshua Hugo; all of Buffalo Center; Michelle, Rachel, and Travis Black, all of Soda Springs, Idaho, Kristen Black, of Utah; and Makaila Black, of New Mexico; a great-grandchild, Braxton, of Utah; Twilla Leonard, whom he loved as a grandchild; two brothers, Roger and Boyce Black, of Washington State; and a sister, Darlisa Black, also of Washington State; as well as by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Sheldon; and a sister, Nora Kyte, all of Washington State.

A memorial service will be held Friday, February 2, 2018, at 2:00 PM at the Heritage Town Center in Buffalo Center. His family will greet friends during the hour before the service at the Heritage Town Center.
