The town of Gowrie was completely terrorized for three days by a gang of striking railroad employees from the Gowrie and Northwestern Road. The occasion for the riotous proceedings was a strike on the Gowrie and Northwestern. The company had been employing a gang of rough and turbulent men in the construction of its new road. A party of them entered the saloon of Phil McCaffery and proceeded to take possession. The bartender got into an altercation with one of the tramps and struck him over the head with a beer bottle, completely placing him hors du combat. Extra police were put on and the gang was finally rounded up. The jail was too small to accommodate the throng and they were placed in box cars and other convenient places of incarceration. Most of them have been deported by the authorities.
