Arlis Niffenegger, 65, Kalona, was killed when he was struck by a tree while logging 4.5 miles southwest of Tipton at 11:15 a.m. April 23.

Niffenegger was part of a crew felling oak trees on the Dr. James McNutt property on rough ground near the Cedar river. Officials who went to the scene said that Niffenegger had been struck by a dead limb that fell from the tree, pinning him to the ground and that the tree fell on him. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Dr. Walter Kruse, Cedar county medical examiner.

McNutt purchased the farm from Duane Bolton and the timber was being cut in preparation for the construction of a house.

Funeral services for Niffenegger were held at the Kalona United Methodist church April 26 with burial in Sharon Hill cemetery. A memorial fund has been established.

The son of Ober and Nettie Grady Niffenegger, he was born near Kalona Feb. 11, 1915. He was married to Muriel Michel at Brooklyn March 18, 1939. They lived all their married life in the Kalona area.

He attended the Kalona schools and had been a timber contractor for a number of years. He was a former member of bricklayers local 1238.

Mr. Niffenegger is survived by his wife, 4 sons; Michael and Ward, both of Kalona, Gerald, Channahon, Ill. and William, Minneapolis, Minn.; 2 daughters, Mrs. Steve (Dixie) Schlabaugh and Jane, both of Kalona, 9 grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Adelaide Ritz, Gulf Port, Fla.
