Death of Mrs. Samuel Hall
Passed Away at 5:45 o’Clock Saturday Evening after Lingering Illness

Mrs. Samuel Hall died Saturday 28 Apr 1906 at her home on South Avenue B in Washington. Mrs. Hall had been ailing for the past nine months, but was not considered seriously ill until about two months ago. Her condition became worse until the ulcers which formed in her stomach caused the death of this aged lady.

Miss Millie Lazenbethy was born in March 1829, in Ardell County, N.C., a daughter of Bennett and Sylvia Simpson Lazenbethy. She was born on a plantation among slaves. She grew to womanhood in that section of the country and in 1852 her master moved to western Tennessee near the town of Summerville in Fayette County. In a short time, her master bought Samuel Hall, who had been raised within a short distance of Miss Lazenbethy when in North Carolina. Three years later, in 1855, Mr. Hall and Miss Lazenbethy were married and had lived together for over fifty years. In 1864, after the emancipation of the slaves, Mr. and Mrs. Hall moved to Washington, Iowa, which has since been their home.

The deceased was the mother of fourteen children, nine of whom are living: Frank Hall of Washington, Mose Hall of Oskaloosa, Ben Hall who is in the regular Army at Ft. Niobrara, Neb., Ab Hall of Washington, Mrs. Mary Holmes of Moline, Ill., James Hall whose address is not known, Mrs. Annie Rushing of north of the city, Isaac Hall of Omaha, Neb., and Augustine of West Liberty.

The funeral services were held this afternoon in the A. M. E. church, conducted by her former pastor, Rev. M. I. Gordon of Ottumwa. Mrs. Hall had been a member of the A. M. E. Church of this city for over 35 years and had also been a member of the same church at her old home in North Carolina. Interment was at the city cemetery, {Woodlawn Cemetery}
