Marvel Marie Mitchell, daughter of Harry Earl Reynolds and Rebecca Wickett Reynolds was born November 23, 1935 on the family farm near New Virginia, Iowa and passed from this life Thursday, February 18, 2021 at Madison County Memorial Hospital at 85 years of age.

Marie received her education in Warren County where she graduated from New Virginia High School.

She was united in marriage to Merrell Eugene Mitchell on January 2, 1955 at the New Virginia United Methodist Church and this union was blessed with two children, Brian and Connie.

Marie and Merrell made their home on the farm outside of New Virginia where she spent a great deal of time working alongside Merrell. In addition, she was a homemaker, mother and grandmother who loved her family and the time she was able to spend with them. She was an avid seamstress and made many quilts over the years. Marie was also well known for her cooking and baking and always had something sweet in her kitchen and could whip up a meal for guests with a moment’s notice. In later years, Marie enjoyed the opportunity to baby sit her grandchildren and attend their events as they grew older.

Marie and Merrell enjoyed their time together over the years especially when they could take a little trip to the local casino. She was very involved in her community and was a member of the Cheery Pal Club, New Virginia Garden Club and New Virginia United Methodist Church where she was given accolades as the mother and grandmother of the year. She was also the Queen of the Old Settlers Celebration in 2007 and she and Merrell were presented with the Good Farm Neighbor Award.

Those relatives who preceded Marie in death were her parents, Harry Earl Reynolds and Rebecca Reynolds; step-mother, Gladys Reynolds; sister, Barbara June Dop, brother, Donald Wayne Reynolds, sister-in-law, Doris Marie Reynolds, brother-in-law, Doyle Houlette, brother-in-law, Roy Elben, brother-in-law, Arlen Dop, sister-in-law, Opal Mitchell and her father and mother-in-law, William and Pearl Mitchell.

Marvel leaves to cherish her memory, husband, Merrell Mitchell of New Virginia, IA, son Brian (Jonna) Mitchell of New Virginia, IA, daughter, Connie Hohertz of Greenfield, IA, sister, Helen Elben of Truro, IA, grandson, Jason (Alanah) Mitchell of Des Moines, IA, granddaughter, Jill (Tom) Koch of Runnells, IA, grandson, Brandon Geib of Des Moines, IA, granddaughter, Sidney Hohertz of Creston, IA, grandson, Clay Hohertz of Greenfield, IA; great-grandchildren, Clover Mitchell, Renn Mitchell, Ilse Mitchell, Leo Mitchell, Oliver Koch and Addison Koch as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Services will be held at Kale Funeral Home in Osceola, Tuesday, February 23, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Bruce Giese and Pastor Jim Miller officiating.

The family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, February 22, 2021 at Kale Funeral Home.

The use of face coverings at either event are REQUIRED. If you are unable to attend the service in person, a live stream will be available at kalefuneralhome.com on Marie’s tribute wall beginning at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday. Interment will be in the New Virginia Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to New Virginia United Methodist Church, 301 West St., New Virginia, IA 50210.
