Viona Arlene (Baker) Schaefer
(June 10, 1938 – June 5, 1960)

Viona Arlene Baker, daughter of Mrs. Robert Bauer, was born in Des Moines June 10, 1938, and died Sunday morning, June 5 [1960], at Mercy hospital in Des Moines, at the age of 21 years, 11 months, and 25 days, after one month of illness.
On June 6, 1957, she was united in marriage to Gerald S. Schaefer and they made their home in Des Moines where both were employed. A daughter was born to them May 5, 1960. Besides her husband, Gerald, and month-old Lisa Ann, she is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bauer; three brothers, Michael, Bobby, and Anthony; her grandmother, Mrs. Glenn Baker, all of Lacona, and many relatives and friends. Her grandfather, Glenn Baker, preceded her in death August 16, 1959.
Viola grew to young womanhood in Lacona, where she graduated from high school in 1957, then entered Thompson’s School of Beauty Culture in Des Moines and graduated in 1958. She was employed for some time by her mother as assistant beautician. She spent a few months in Los Angeles, California where she was employed. Later she returned to Des Moines and worked at Wolfs Beauty Salon and at Ex-cel-cis Beauty Shop until April 1960, prior to her death. She was baptized into St. Mary’s Catholic Church June 24, 1956, made her first communion Aug 5, 1956, and was confirmed May 18, 1958. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, June 8, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church by the Rev. Fr. John Kovac.
