William E. Lyon Buried Tuesday
Wm. Elmer Lyon, oldest son of J. W. and Nancy Lyon, was born in Sandyville, Warren County, Iowa, July 11, 1857 and departed this life Jan. 6, 1935. His entire life was spent in his beloved state of Iowa. He attended the public schools and on reaching young manhood entered the Ackworth Academy, where he spent three delightful years, with Professor E. W. Beard, Professor Julian Beard and W. G. Stanley as his instructors. Upon leaving the Academy he spent several years teaching in the public schools of Warren County. He came to the Academy with no money and he thought no friends. He worked his way through school and afterward said this gave him the best training in self control, experience, sacrifice and self reliance a boy could have.
While attending the academy he met Miss Virginia Blattenberg, who afterward became his wife, January 1, 1880. Later they settled on a farm near Liberty Center. It was here their four children were born. It was here his beloved wife died May 30, 1919. On October 3, 1920, he was married to Miss Emma Parker, of Watseka, Ill., who preceded him July 8, 1922.
In August 1923 he was married to Miss Ida L. Moore, of Kellerton, Iowa, who has constantly and patiently cared for him during his last illness of over a year. In the winter of 1893, under the pastorate of Rev. Charles Flesher, he was converted and joined the Methodist Episcopal church at Liberty Center. Upon moving to Indianola he transferred his membership to the M. E. church of that place.
A radiant personality, a love of life and fellowmen, a thoughtfulness for others were truly his. During his very last sickness he often expressed himself by saying, “It takes a lot of patience and fortitude to come down to death so slowly.” But apparently had no fear of the last sting of death.

Beside his wife he leaves four children, Harry L., of Des Moines, George S., Mary Frances and Florence Gertrude of Liberty Center, a brother, John of Ottumwa, Ia., a sister, Alice Bell, of Chariton, Ia., and a sister Hattie McClurg of Fresno, Calif., seven grandchildren and many other blood kin and a host of friends. Most of this “sketch” as he called it was written by Wm. Lyon, as he was generally known, and finished by his children. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, Jan 8, at 1 o’clock, at the Orr Funeral home. The services were conducted by the Rev. M. A. Gable. Burial was in the Indianola cemetery.
