Wanita Irene "Newberry" Toney (98) passed away at her home in Carlisle, Iowa early on the morning of May 30, 2018. She was born on August 26, 1919 on a farm near Lamoni, Iowa. The second child born to Arthur B and Laura (Beers) Newberry grew up in the Lamoni community attending rural school and graduating from Lamoni High School.

In 1936 Wanita married a Lamoni boy she met at school. She and Gerald D. Toney had been married 63 years when he passed away in 1999. Wanita and Gary had 3 children, Marvel Hansen (Bob Sinclair) of Lenexa, Kansas, Laura K. Orlich (Gary) of Tucson, Arizona and Dr. Rand D. Toney (Barbara) of West Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Michael Kuhn of Hamburg, Germany lived with the family for a year as an exchange student and became a son and brother. Gary and Wanita lived in Kellerton, Iowa, Washington, D.C., Knoxville, Iowa and moved to a small acreage near Carlisle in 1954 where Wanita lived until her death. She worked at the Hartford Carlisle Savings Bank for 23 years and became acquainted with many Carlisle residents through that contact. She was also a classroom volunteer in the public school and a volunteer at the Carlisle Historic House (Randleman House)

Wanita was preceded in death by her older brother, Wayne, and younger siblings, Charlotte, Jack and Ruby. Surviving are sisters, Betty and Marie and brother, Roger. Along with her children she is also survived by 5 grandchildren, Erick (Lori)Hansen, Danisha Hansen Regan (John), Aaron (Barbara) Racine, Sarah (Patrick) Toney Pauley and David Toney; 8 great grandchildren called her Great Momma or Granny, Jackson, McKenna and Tessa Regan, Wyatt and Asa Racine, Signe and Maren Hansen, and Kelly (Jonathan) Hackett.

The family will welcome friends at Peterson Funeral Home in Carlisle on Sunday afternoon June 3 from 4:0-6:00 p.m. Funeral services for Wanita will be held at the Central Congregation of Community of Christ in Des Moines on Monday, June 4 at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Lamoni, Iowa at 3:00 p.m. on Monday.

Memorials for Wanita may be made to the Carlisle Historical Society designated for renovation of the Randleman House or the Des Moines Central Congregation of Community of Christ. Online condolences may be made at www.petersonfuneralservice.com .
