Obituary
DIED – Near Norwalk, on the 15th of Dec., 1885, Jonathan Swayne, in the 80th year of this age. Mr. Swayne was born in Bucks County, PA, March 3, 1805. From there he moved to Ross County, Ohio, then to Indiana. From there he moved to Warren County, Iowa, in the year 1852. Was converted and united with the M. E. church in 1844. Married to Mary Yount, his now bereaved wife, in 1837, who with six sons and three daughters, is left to tread the remainder of life’s journey alone. Mr. Swayne came to Warren County at an early day and knew what it was to endure the hardship of frontier life. But by industry and good management he secured enough of this world’s abundance for her who stood by his side in the battle of life. By an honest and upright walk he won the esteem of all his neighbors, and by a life devoted to the service of the Master he obtained a hope that was an anchor to his soul in the declining years of his long life. The hope of the bright hereafter gives sweet peace to the Christian throughout life; it is his all. How comforting the thought that after life here has ceased there is that better home on high prepared for all God’s children. Earthly things may fail but that blessed hope points ever to many mansions. While the hope of the wicked perishes, while the infi…. scoff, an --- soil, as he stand beside his brother’s grave exclaims, “when we look out into the future or call to the future the only answer is the echo of our own voice: - the dying Christian can fold his arms upon his breast and calmly close his eyes in death explaining, “I know that if this earthly house id dissolved, we have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.” So may you who are bereft and lonely have this inspiring hope to be your …. to the years to come; that on that beautiful shore, we shall all meet again.
