Isaac Garrett
(April 14, 1790 – December 10, 1890)

ALMOST A CENTENARIAN
DEATH OF FATHER ISAAC GARRET AT INDIANOLA
Indianola, Dec 12 [1890] – Special to the State Register [Des Moines, IA]. – Isaac Garrett was buried here today. Such an announcement is not striking, but when taken in connection with the fact that had the subject of it lived a few more months he would have been 100 years old, it becomes interesting. Father Garrett was born in Duchess County, N.Y., April 14, 1790; his father moved to Canada while he was yet a child; he grew to manhood in Canada and was married there, returning to New York in 1843; from thence to Michigan in 1845, where he continued to live until 1884, when he came to Indianola to make his home with his daughter, Mrs. W. W. Carpenter, who has tenderly cared for him ever since. While living in Canada, he served one year in the English militia, doing duty for the king of Great Britain in the war of 1812. After returning to the United States his first vote for president was cast for W. H. Harrison, and his last presidential vote was cast in 1889, for Benj. Harrison. Always active in politics, he attended the rally of the Tippecanoe Club held here last year and took great interest in the campaign. He had been sick but very little during his life and died from sheer exhaustion of physical powers.
