Obituary
Joseph C. Harding was born in Stafford County, Virginia, Apr 7th, 1830. In 1855 he removed with his parents to Salem, Iowa, and in 1857 to the vicinity of Woodburn, Iowa. Oct 8th 1871 he was married to Miss Laverna Barnes. In 1882 they removed from Woodburn to New Virginia where they have since resided. Mr. Harding was a section foreman on the railroad and about five o’clock on the evening of Sept 20th he and a companion were coming in on the hand car hurrying to get in ahead of the coming storm when he was struck by lightning and instantly killed. He was the father of eight children, three of whom died in 1882. Mr. Harding was the son of Rev Thomas S. Harding of the Baltimore conference who resided near Woodburn for many years. Mr. Harding had been a member of the M. E. Church for many years and held the office of class leader at New Virginia for a number of years. An earnest, consistent Christian, always found at his post, he will be much missed in the work of the church. The entire community mourns his loss and sympathizes with the afflicted family who has been so suddenly bereft of a kind husband and father. The funeral was held from the M. E. Church at 4 o’clock on the afternoon of the 21 last, conducted by the pastor. The large church was filled with people who realized that they had lost a friend and brother. What is our loss is his eternal gain. A sister, Mrs. D. W. Randolph of Aurora, Ill and her husband arrived on the morning of the 22nd, it being impossible for any of his people to arrive in time for the funeral. J. D. Detar, Pastor
