Simon Thomas
(1806 – Sept 21, 1873)

Warren County Leader, Indianola, IA., Thurs., Oct 2, 1873, p.3
In Memoriam
Again we have been called upon to mourn the loss of one of our beloved members, Brother Simon Thomas; but we have the assurance that our loss is his infinite and eternal gain. Father Thomas was born at Alexandria, Virginia, A.D. 1806, and from thence he removed to Ohio while yet a young man. He came to Iowa nearly nineteen years ago. He was converted to God and joined the M. E. Church, in Gratiot, Ohio, and lived a consistent member of that church until by the Master he was called from his sufferings on earth to the bliss of heaven, Sept. 21st, 1873. For 35 years he was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He remarked several times during his last illness that he had great confidence in the principles of Odd Fellowship. We therefore recommend the adoption of the following resolutions: Resolved that in the death of Brother Thomas our Lodge has lost a faithful and devoted member, community a good citizen, and his family a kind father and husband. Resolved that as members of our beloved Order we will strive to emulate his virtues and that we will seek also to be ready when our change shall come. Resolved that our hall be draped in mourning and that each brother wear the usual badge of mourning for thirty days. Resolved that a copy of these resolutions be furnished sister Thomas and also each of the city papers for publication. D. G. Peck, Geo. Clammer, P. P. Henderson, Committee
