Obituary
Robert Cleland was born June 8, 1829, in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, and died at his home in Bevington, Warren County, IA., March 18, 1910, aged eighty years, nine months and ten days. He came with his father’s family to Iowa in the fall of 1855, and settled in Madison County and has ever since been a resident of Madison or Warren County, IA. He was married Sept 2nd, 1857, to Elizabeth Judkins of Warren County, IA. To them were born nine children, five of whom died in infancy. Four are now living to mourn the loss of a devoted father. Charles D. and Laura of Bevington; Mrs. Wm. Carter and Mrs. W. M. Stiles, of Kansas City; also two sisters, one brother, several grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
The greater part of his life has been spent in teaching in the public schools of Pennsylvania and Iowa, having taught his one hundred and third term nineteen years ago when failing health compelled him to give up his profession. At an early age he united with the Presbyterian Church and lived in that faith till his death. Six years ago he became afflicted with that dread disease, cancer, and during all these years of affliction born with great patience he had constantly given evidence of his trust in the Heavenly father and looked longingly for his release that he might go to his home not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. Several years ago he requested Rev. S. W. Lee, of Wick, that if he survived him he would preach his funeral, as Mr. Lee had been his warm personal friend for over fifty years. The funeral Sunday at Blair chapel conducted by Mr. Lee and Rev. G. E. Nichols, was one of the largest ever held in the neighborhood. The Masons holding their ritual service at the grave. The family desire to thank the Masonic order, the friends and neighbors for the many acts of kindness and sympathy shown during his sickness and at his death.
