BATAVIA - The service for Richard F. Pumphrey, 70, of rural Batavia, who died at 9:40 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16, 1992, at Ottumwa regional Health Center in Ottumwa, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Campbell-Kremer Funeral Home in Batavia with the Rev. Thomas Clark officiating. Burial will be in Batavia Cemetery. Visitation will be open starting at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. A Masonic service will be held will be held there at 7 p.m. Wednesday, followed by family visitation until 8:30. Memorials have been established to Jefferson County Hospice, Cardinal Athletic Club and Batavia United Methodist.

Pumphrey was born May 19, 1921, in Jefferson County, the son of Wilbur Cromwell and Lettie Williams Pumphrey. He was raised and educated in Batavia, graduating from Batavia High School in 1939. He married Phyllis Mitchell Curray on May 22, 1943, in Ottumwa. He was a farmer and lived all of his life on the Jefferson County farm where he was born. He was a member of Batavia United Methodist Church, Kilwinning Masonic Lodge 198 AF and AM WTQMA Racing Association of Moline, Ill., Keep Young Club of Fairfield and AARP of Ottumwa.

Surviving are his wife; three sons, Robert M. of Eldon, John C. of Fargo, N.D., James R. of Hastings, Minn.; six grandchildren and a foster sister, Shirley Moore Sullivan of Oceanside, Calif.
